I grew up on an exotic animal farm, studied animal behavior
in college, and have held several different jobs in my young career working
directly with animals. I’ve spent my entire life learning about a wide variety
of different species, and I’ve picked up a ton of animal trivia along the way.
Unfortunately as I’ve moved into a career dependent on my knowledge of animals, I have come to a frustrating conclusion. A lot of animal nerds (birdwatchers, fish guys, fancy dog breeders etc…) are jerks. They assume that they know something cool that you don’t, so they must be superior (and you must be an idiot).
I cannot begin to count the number of times I've gotten snide remarks from other animal nerds because I'm female, socially adept, and under the age of 30. Obviously there are instances in which I don't know as much about a certain topic as my colleagues, but this doesn't make me uneducated; it simply means I haven't studied as much about that particular topic. If you've ever found yourself in a similar situation, then this blog is for you. It's a fun, straightforward, and easy opportunity to learn more about advanced and interesting animal topics (without any condescension).
